IRB application

Questions...can anyone answer?

1. When filling out the number of participants, what if you aren't exactly sure how many? I know I am going to be interviewing the principal and teachers, but the surveys are going to be available to all the parents at our school. The more that fill them out, the better. So there is no set number.

2. If I am planning on making a DVD, wherein the staff is going to be on the DVD, do I need consent forms? This technically isn't part of the research collection, it is just what is going to be involved with the DVD. All of this comes after the research.

Any answers are appreciated!

  1. Great questions, but I'm not sure about the answers. Here are my "educated" guesses. I would imagine you would lean towards the high side with how many participants--maybe, using language like "the survey will be available to all parents and, as such, could be upwards of xxx number of participants." As far as the DVD participation, maybe you could have the participants/staff sign consent forms explaining they will be shown to the parents. However, I agree that technically they are not part of any research, so you shouldn't have to have formal IRB approval for their participation as it seems it would fall under normal "educational practices." That being said, I could be totally wrong about everything. That was a nice ambiguous answer I know...

  2. Hi Heidi,
I know that you need permission to tape anyone. Our District has as part of their paperwork each year a form that gives the school permission to post pictures and first names as well as any sort of taping. I would say to call the Instructional Technology department at your district and see what they have.

I can't help you with the IRB because I am still struggling with that. I would say give an estimate and maybe Dr. Newberry can give you some guidance.

  3. I think Chris is correct about checking district policy but I don't think it's anything like an IRB. We have a live television station at my school and the students are always taping and televising stuff and all they do is ask for permission to interview you or to film you teaching the class. I think its ok as long as they know they are being taped.

  4. I think Mark is spot on in his answers for the survey question, in that if you put down how many surveys will be made available, you will be okay. Even if you said you sending out 100 surveys (random example) there is no guarantee you will get them all back.

As for the video I think you are fine since it comes after the project and the fact it will be adults. All the same it doesn't hurt to cover all bases as others have suggested.
