Session 10

Here is the storyboard created for the DVD presentation. These ideas were ideas that I informally discussed with my principal and staff members. I know things will change, but at least this gives me a layout of what I need to do. The link of the prototype is on my web page.

Session 9

Good news this week: talked to the company that I am planning to work with for the ETEC 692 class next spring. I'm hoping to fulfill many hours this summer doing different types of work. I just need to get it approved by Dr. Leh (I think she is teaching it next spring). Here is the link to the company is anyone wants to check it out.

Worked on an outline on paper as to what I want the DVD to present. Now I just have to transfer it to PowerPoint. Most of the information will depend upon the surveys that will be going out to parents. That will guide the type of information that will be included.

Revisions

I made a lot of revisions today.

1. revised my ideas and added in a focus group
2. revised my literature review (added summary but still need to add more to last focus area)
3. revised my masters proposal
4. revised my IRB application

Session 8 (IRB, Consent Form, Survey)

I'm still confused about the consent form. If you are using people on the DVD, school staff, does that need IRB approval? This isn't technically part of the research, but this is the development phase already. The IRB is for the actual research that is going to be done...right?

Data Collection & IRB work

Okay, I'm working hard to get this IRB application done so that all the data will be legit and within the time frame that is given on the application. I'm on lightning speed trying to get this done before school gets out and just feel like I am on a real time crunch. I'm really ambiguous as to whether or not I need to provide certain information on the IRB application. Anyone done yet so I can see if I'm on the right page?

Well, on a good note, I met with my principal today to get her approval and told her I would be writing a letter for her to sign, giving me permission to do the study at the school. She loves the whole idea that I am doing and is so supportive. :)

Session 7 (masters proposal)

It's funny how when you work on a certain assignment your ideas on your project begin to change. I definitely made some changes that would work better with the ADDIE and for my school. A lot needs to be done before school gets out. YIKES! Here is the proposal:

Introduction
Building communication between the school, home and community has been a key component for student achievement. There is a need for this relationship because of the expectations that are demanded upon the students. With continuous reinforcement of these expectations at school and in the home, everyone has a part in producing an effective school.

At Urbita Elementary School, a number of opportunities are given for parents to participate in and learn more about the expectations of the students for academic and social achievement. The problem that occurs is that a number of these parents are unable to attend or choose not to. If the parents can’t make it to the school, then the school needs to make it into the homes. That is why a DVD is needed to provide the information that is vital for student success. The purpose of this DVD is to present the information from the school and to answer repeated questions that parents have.

This project will seek to develop this digital presentation using an instructional design process and will attempt to measure the effectiveness of building this relationship, communicating the expectations of both the school and the home, leading to the goal of student achievement.


Literature Review
The three areas of literature that will inform this investigation are positive communication between the home, school, and community, high expectations for all students, and teacher collaboration.


Method
The analysis phase of this project will include focus group discussions at staff meetings, interviewing and surveying. First, gathering information from teachers at staff meetings will begin the analysis phase, seeking information to determine the content that might be presented in the delivery.

Interviewing will be done with the school’s staff to determine specific standards and expectations needed for the school as a whole and at grade level. The decisions made by the staff will determine what information will be included in the digital presentation.

Parent surveys will be developed to determine what information is needed and wanted from the parents of the students.

This information, along with the research reviewed in chapter 2 will inform the development process. A DVD will be created and tested by the administrator, staff, and selected parents. Subject matter experts specializing in graphics and editing will be asked to evaluate the quality of the presentation, making improvements with the given suggestions. Through this testing, modifications will be made to the alpha prototype.

Once the alpha prototype has been tested and improved to the point that the developer is confident of its potential effectiveness, the DVD will emerge into its beta test stage. It will be given to one family for each classroom that will be selected by the teacher. With the DVD, a survey will be given for parents to evaluate the effectiveness of the information and presentation.

Full implementation will take place with the return of the evaluations. The DVD will then be given to all families who attend Urbita Elementary School.


Conclusion
This project will seek to develop a DVD that families can review to understand the expectations needed by both the staff and families at Urbita Elementary School. This digital presentation will help to communicate the expectations of both the school and the home, leading towards the purpose of student achievement.

The ADDIE instructional design model, along with rapid prototyping will be used for this project. The project is expected to commence in June 2009 and end in September of 2009.

I understand, affirm and agree that it is my responsibility to transfer my completed thesis to my first reader no later than 60 days prior to the format review deadline as established by Graduate Studies in order to avoid delays which might lead to my missing the format review deadline.

IRB application

Questions...can anyone answer?

1. When filling out the number of participants, what if you aren't exactly sure how many? I know I am going to be interviewing the principal and teachers, but the surveys are going to be available to all the parents at our school. The more that fill them out, the better. So there is no set number.

2. If I am planning on making a DVD, wherein the staff is going to be on the DVD, do I need consent forms? This technically isn't part of the research collection, it is just what is going to be involved with the DVD. All of this comes after the research.

Session 6

I had a chance to meet with Dr. Newberry and fellow classmates today at the pizza parlor. Valuable information was shared and I found out that the IRB needs to be done ASAP if I want to get surveys done before school is out.

FYI: Before filling out the IRB, you need to do the coursework for CITI (The program for the protection of human research subjects). It's a bit time consuming to read the information and take the quizzes, so I suggest that you start right away.

But reading the information really helped me to think about my project, paying close attention to the protection of the human subjects that I will be needing. Interesing information!

Session 5 (Thesis update)

WOW...that was difficult.  After reading so many articles, books, frameworks, etc., and writing 23 pages of the literature review, I am finally done for now.  I know I want to do some tweaking to the last focus area.  I know I will continue to look for research, but I know I don't want to go overboard, or my final thesis might be over 300 pages.  HAHA.

How did everyone do?  Well, if you are not finished, keep going.  It will be done soon :)

Literature Review: Take 2

Okay...I've just written 5 pages of my literature review, and I've only gotten through my introduction and almost half of my first focus area. This is going to be long...

  • Helpful Hints: once I cite anybody's work, I immediately put that reference in the back
  • Difficulties: keeping track of the quotes I read earlier and want to use. I spent almost a half hour looking for a particular quote. I never found it and now I'm wondering if I ever read it, or it was something I stirred up subconsciously because it sounded good....HMMM? I'm losing it!

I just got back from the library, collecting a few more resources for the literature review. The lady at the information desk really helped me in finding key articles and tips to researching. I found specific quotes and research that related directly to my review. Good day at the library, have more than enough literature...now it's time to write!

Focus Areas

I think I have my focus areas set. I found an overwhelming amount of articles that touches upon these areas:

1. Home-School partnership (keeping an open communication)
  • this gives me a reason to make the digital presentation
2. Setting school-wide expectations (academic, social, & behavioral)
  • this gives me idea of what should go on the DVD
3. Teacher collaboration (the importance of working together for student achievement)
  • this tells me how I am going to do this

Good idea for lit review

Hey guys...

I was reading Writing the Winning Thesis or Dissertation and it had great tips when looking for literature on your topic. I really liked the section on how to organize all the articles and books (pp. 31-38), which will be many after so many weeks. A simple number code will help you weed through the literature: #1 "must-have, #2 "maybe", #3 "no" as to how useful that information is going to be.

I've started a big binder with all the articles that I've found information that was useful. I've coded them by number and they are separated under different tabs. This has helped me to stay organized with all my collecting and reading. When it comes time to write, hopefully I'll know where everything is.

Needs Assessment #1

I e-mailed our staff today to get their input for the DVD. They quickly came up with some great ideas. On the e-mail, I gave them some guidelines to follow, thinking about issues that affect our entire school rather than just in their classroom. I'm waiting for more responses, and then I plan to compile the list, and discuss with them at a staff meeting what the final information will be included. Would this be considered a Focus Group?

Pre-Thesis (session 2)

Introduction
A successful school year includes the involvement of those who have a direct connection with the school: school employees, students, and parents or guardians. A relationship between all will help to ensure that the expectations of the school are understood, and that any misinterpretations are addressed immediately. According to Jo-Ann Cipriano Pepperl and Lawrence W. Lezotte, “A welcoming attitude is the single, most critical factor in encouraging parental involvement and partnership with the school, but not every school creates such an atmosphere” (2001, p. 3). This is true for a number of schools. A relationship is not built amongst the community, leading to difficulties throughout the year. That is why a welcoming presentation at the beginning of the year is necessary.
This thesis ties into the need of a partnership between the school and families. Building this home-school relationship will be done within the first week of school through a “Welcome Back” digital presentation for all families attending the school. The development of the project will directly relate to one of the correlates of an effective school, Positive Communication – School, Home, and Community. It will also allow the staff to work as a Professional Learning Community, collaboratively working towards the same goal. Schools can only hope for a successful school year, and open communication at the beginning of the year where expectations are stated is a starting point towards this success.

This book shares a number of researchers who discuss the topic of positive home-school relations. A common statement among these researchers was that parent involvement, in almost any form, improves student achievement. This activity improves children’s attitudes toward the school, achievement is increased, and children have a higher self-esteem (Pepperl & Lezotte, 2001).

Addressing the different topics and building this relationship is “integral to the process of learning and successful of schooling” (Patrikakou & Weissberg, 1999. P. 4)

The section in this article that relates directly to the project is the importance of parent-teacher communications. There is a need for better communication to improve student achievement. This leads to further discussion about expectations of the school and for the classroom.

This article begins at the earlier years of education, including kindergarten. It states that families anticipate the start of the school years with expectations that may differ from those of the school they are attending. There is a need to welcome the children and their families into a formal school experience (Laverick, 2007). The article continues to discuss the transitions the children go through and what schools can do make the situation more comfortable.

Informal Focus Group

I've discussed with my administrator my ideas for the project today, and she wanted me to share it at our staff meeting that day. Once the ideas were shared, it turned into a mini informal focus group session. Teachers began to give their input on what they wanted to see on the "Welcome Back" DVD.

Knowing their excited about the project gets me excited about it also. In the future, I will need to invite teachers from all grade levels to discuss the possibilities of this presentation in a more organized session. After gathering their information and ideas, I will share it with the administrators and ask for more input before making the final decisions.

ETEC 644 Session 2

THINKING ABOUT THE THESIS:

After looking over the parent handbook (in which I originally planned to turn that into a digital presentation), I found that the handbook included numerous education codes and policies. It is a lot of wording that would be difficult to put into a digital presentation. Let's face it, who wants to talk about or demonstrate examples of suspension, expulsion, harassment, etc. on DVD or on the Internet. I think it's better to keep that information on paper.

I think overall, I want the parents and students to connect with our school and staff right at the beginning of the year. I want them to hear expectations from the principal and all grade levels, so they get an understanding of how serious we are about their education and discipline.

With this in mind, I am thinking now of putting together a welcome digital presentation for parents and students to watch the first week of school. I want these families to be familiar, comfortable, and ready for a tough year ahead. With most issues being discussed on the presentation, there shouldn't be too many surprises throughout the year.

***I also picked up some theses at the library to get an idea of what's ahead of me. It's been helpful in beginning the introduction to the thesis.

ETEC 644 Session 1

Hello ETEC 644...

Well, it's hard to believe that we are finally going to start working on this thesis after talking about it back from ETEC 500. Although I am excited about it because we are halfway through the program, I am nervous about all the work that is ahead of us.

For my thesis, I plan to do design and development. I wanted to do something for the school I am at that would be meaningful for me as well as all those who attend our school. Our school has really been striving to be a technology school, and we have made leaps and bounds to get there. I was thinking of something that the families of our school need, is used every year, but is not in digital form.

With this in mind, I am planning on turning our "Parent Handbook" into a digital format presentation. The parent handbook is given out at the beginning of each year, listing all the rules, regulations, and expectations of our school. It is a long book that is supposed to be read by the parents and then shared with the students. Who knows if they read the book, but if it was put in digital form (whether on DVD or on the Internet), maybe parents would take that time to watch it with their children, and the information of our school and district will be better understood.

I've already discussed it with my principal, and she loves the idea. I have a lot of ideas with the design and development of it. What I'm most nervous about is finding the right literature to back it up.
